As flu season approaches, many employers will be planning to offer workplace flu vaccinations as part of their overall health and wellbeing programmes.
This year, however, there have been reports of potential shortages of flu vaccinations in Ireland which may cause delays or cancellations of workplace vaccinations.
So, what should employers do next?
Workplace flu vaccinations
Offering flu vaccinations at work can add a number of benefits for both employers and employees.
For employers, a workplace vaccination initiative can help reduce disruption caused by seasonal illness, particularly during the winter months. The HSE recommends flu vaccination as the best protection against flu, and for employers this may mean that illness is less likely to spread amongst their staff.
Making vaccination more convenient helps staff to get vaccinated without having to make separate arrangements and take time off work. Providing access to vaccination, and reliable information about vaccines, can also be a valuable addition to a business’ overall health and wellness programme. Participation should be voluntary, and it’s important to provide employees with the appropriate information so they can make an informed decision.
What should employers do now?
Employers who are planning to implement workplace vaccination programmes should check vaccine availability with their provider. If an on-site clinic isn’t possible this year, it’s important to communicate these changes to employees and let them know that they may need to make alternative arrangements.
There are also many other ways to promote workplace health and wellbeing during the winter months, such as:
- Encouraging regular handwashing amongst employees
- Reduce the risk of infection by encouraging employees to stay at home if they have an illness such as the flu
- Conduct regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, particularly during periods of increased illness
- Where applicable, ensure that ventilation systems are in place and that they continue to provide sufficient fresh air
- Monitor indoor air quality and ensure heating systems are operating effectively
